The strategy is also meant to function as a framework for all HS&E decisions and to give priority to the efforts and set long-term goals. The strategy is supported by projects, which are approved by the Lundbeck HS&E Council.
Lundbeck’s HS&E strategy is founded on a solid knowledge of company processes and a long-standing experience of systematic HS&E work. The focus areas and success criteria below cover the period 2008-2010 and reflect Lundbeck’s demand for development in the HS&E area, including the most important challenges in contributing to a more sustainable development.
- HS&E considerations related to the development of pharmaceuticals
- A healthy working environment
- Consumption and waste
- Energy and CO2 emission
- HS&E System
- Work-related accidents and environmental incidents
- Communication
Below the criteria for success are described for each element:
HS&E considerations related to the development of pharmaceuticals
Developing, manufacturing, and marketing new drugs are core elements of our business. Health, safety and the environment should be taken into consideration already when new products and processes are developed. We seek to achieve this by using the least harmful substances and choosing processes that pose the lowest risks to humans and the environment. We conduct environmental risk assessments of the active compounds in our new drugs. Moreover, we are improving procedures for systematically involving health, safety and environmental factors in our R&D projects.
A healthy working environment
Lundbeck aims at implementing efficient measures to ensure a healthy working environment for our employees. Excellent management is one key driver for this. Our efforts also include managing health & safety aspects under major changes, implementing a corporate health promotion strategy and implementing efficient efforts regarding significant psychological work conditions. Â
Resource consumption and waste
We assess the costs and benefits related to health, safety and environmental investments. Productivity enhancements will be used as a foundation for developing a waste strategy, focusing on lowering resource consumption including increasing recycling volumes.
Energy optimisation and CO2 strategy
Lundbeck acts responsibly in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emissions. We do not wish to pioneer this field but will dedicate our efforts to maintaining a leading position among global pharmaceutical companies. Our specific target is for our CO2 emission in 2016 to be on level with that of 2006. We will account for our efforts in Lundbeck’s annual reports and also report our performance to the Climate Disclosure Project and other key stakeholders.
Management systems and audit
During 2008, Lundbeck’s corporate HS&E system (ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001) will come to cover all sites worldwide within research, development and production. The system will help to maintain focus on prevention and continuous improvements, as well as ensuring clear communication of HS&E issues.
Work-related accidents and incidents
At Lundbeck, we analyse all work-related accidents and environmental incidents to prevent recurrence. Another element in our accident prevention is the reporting and thorough analysis of near-miss situations.
CommunicationÂ
A proactive communication strategy shall ensure a good, ongoing dialogue on health, safety and environmental aspects with employees and external stakeholders. This involves implementing new communication tools and methods.
