Azilect® in Parkinson’s disease

PrintIncrease text size
Azilect® (rasagiline) is the first truly innovative therapy for Parkinson’s disease to have been introduced in many years. Azilect is indicated for the treatment of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease, both as monotherapy (without L-dopa) and as adjunct therapy (with L-dopa) in patients with end-of-dose fluctuations.

In 3 large clinical trials, Azilect® has demonstrated its safety and efficacy in improving symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in both early and moderate-to-advanced disease. It has a simple convenient once-daily, no titration dosing regimen regardless of disease stage.

Please refer to your local prescribing information for further details. If you are a Parkinson’s disease patient and have further questions on Azilect®, please ask your physician or pharmacist. If you are a healthcare professional, please refer to www.azilect.com.

How it works
In healthy people, body movements are regulated by nerve cells, which signal to one another using a neurotransmitter called dopamine. In people with Parkinson’s disease, there is a lack of dopamine in the brain, and therefore these signals are disturbed, which causes problems with movement control.

Azilect® inhibits an enzyme called Monoamine Oxidase-B (MAO-B), which breaks down dopamine in the central nervous system. The result of this MAO-B inhibition is an increased level of dopamine in the brain. This significantly reduces the symptoms of Parkinson’s.

Azilect® is safe and well-tolerated in both young and elderly Parkinson’s patients.
