Azilect® in Parkinson’s disease

PrintIncrease text size
Azilect® (rasagiline) is licensed for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD), both as monotherapy (without L-dopa, another medicine used in Parkinson’s disease) and as adjunct therapy (with L-dopa) in patients with end-of-dose fluctuations.

Azilect® has been studied in four large clinical studies and has shown to have significant efficacy for PD patients as well as being both safe and tolerable. Azilect® is taken as a single tablet, once daily, and does not require titration.

Results of the ADAGIO study were presented in the peer-reviewed medical journal The New England Journal of Medicine (September 2009).

Please refer to your local prescribing information for further details.

How it works
Body movements are regulated by nerve cells, which signal to one another using neurotransmitter dopamine. In people with Parkinson's disease, there is a lack of dopamine in the brain, and therefore these signals are disturbed, which causes problems with movement control.
Azilect® inhibits an enzyme called Monoamine Oxidase-B (MAO-B), which breaks down dopamine in the central nervous system. The result of this MAO-B inhibition is an increased level of dopamine in the brain. This leads to a symptomatic improvement for the Parkinson's disease patient, relieving symptoms such as stiffness and slowness of movement and improving patient quality of life.

Healthcare professionals
