Significant aspects

Lundbeck’s most significant impact on people and the environment derives from our use of raw materials, generation of waste and production of airborne emissions.

Our research activities and the development and manufacturing of pharmaceuticals are based on chemical synthesis. For this reason, Lundbeck’s most significant health, safety and environmental (HSE) impact derives from the use of raw materials (organic solvents, water and energy), the generation of waste and the production of airborne emissions.

Lundbeck’s active pharmaceutical ingredients are produced at our two chemical production facilities in Italy and Denmark, while our pharmaceutical production is located in Denmark and France. Research activities take place in Denmark and the USA.

We plan the design of the later manufacturing process as early as the research and development stage; this includes decisions on the raw materials to be used, requirements for cooling, amount of waste generation, etc. We aim, therefore, to design our manufacturing processes in a way that creates the least possible impact on people and the environment. Our solutions for reducing this impact are of a preventive nature, such as replacing hazardous substances and minimising consumption. For example, we aim to eliminate direct contact with hazardous compounds or allergens.

In the manufacturing process, the solutions available to minimise HSE impacts are more limited and of a less preventive nature. We always train our employees with regard to work procedures and the precautions that should be taken. Personal protective equipment is always used when required.
